If anyone has seen, Ao3 now has a new (experimental) search option! In the “Search within results” field, you can add “otp: true” for a search that only includes works that have one relationship tags. While it will exclude works with your OTP as the main pairing that also have background relationships tagged, it should help a ton in being able to find works where the relationship you’re looking for is the main focus.

This is especially valuable for ships that aren’t as incredibly popular in a fandom, or that are often regulated to a background pairing. If you’re interested, please go look at for more information on this and other ways you can search Ao3.

I don't know how much it helps. This way you can miss a lot of fics where the pairing you want is the main one.

For example my favorite pairing gets only 3 - 4 fics/updates per week, 90% of them are also tagged with another relationship. What I really wish for is is a way to search tags depending on the order they are used.

For example to be able to filter out all ASOIAF fics where Sansa is listed as a first or second character. Tagging is great, but especially in fandoms where there are a lot of characters filters are not very effective. Tons of people love to just tag every single minor thing that happens in the story. Yeah some fics have got so much tags on them, it's like four paragraphs long. That's why I actually do my best to use just what I need on the characters, the few important relationships (not every single one in the story of them) and like if it's action, drama, romance and that.

Basic barebones stuff and nothing more. When you've got so many tags it's hard for to get to the summary or understand it, there's a problem. If a story has too many tags, I honestly can't be bothered reading it Pretty much same here same as with super long author notes.

Just irks me for some reason. I try to avoid that, although there a few fics I have with kind of long author notes but just kind of happened for needing to explain stuff in a small handful of my stories. Also, I get annoyed by fics that are tagged as 'explicit' that then tag every single erotic action. Just putting down explicit is good enough guys, don't need to go overboard with describing everything. A nice feature, but I just sort of realized how lackadaisical they are about policing their tags. While I somewhat understand it’s an unending undertaking, it’s disappointing to see people can intentionally mistag their fanfics and your only option as reader is to scroll past them endlessly anytime you find a fanfic of someone who isn’t tagging properly.

And of course they seem to be the ones to be pumping out the most fanfics for some reason. I wish you could even just, while logged in, blacklist certain authors to be able to filter their results out of any searches or something similar so that if there’s a known figure mistagging things (or just someone whose content you don’t want to see), you can auto-hide their stuff so it isn’t an issue. If you aren’t going to make sure people tag things appropriately, at least let the users handle it themselves.
